Idolatry Discerning

At our chapel today, we looked at how we need to discern the idols that are in our lives and how they threaten to push God out of our lives. 
We opened with this great, upbeat song from Rend Collective
about God being our vision:

Then we watched this inspiring video of how some 
high school students saw a problem and made a difference:

I Am Second is a great video series of people who are using their faith to make a difference. 

We then welcomed Pastor Kevin. He spoke to us about idolatry discerning. 

Our idols today are not golden calves and Baal statues. 
Our idols of today include electronics, social media, school work, sports,  
friendships, being popular, name brand clothing and fashion.

Pastor Kevin then told us we need to protect ourselves from the idols 
that want our hearts, time and attention. 
Just like in hockey we need to be protected, we also need to protect our hearts and minds. 

We can protect ourselves from idols creeping into our lives by:
1) Reading the Bible
2) Praying
3) Worshiping - at church, at school, at play and at work


And while we love to celebrate everyone's birthday at Beacon, 
today we had to sing a special happy birthday to Mrs. Judy Dykstra!
We love you, Mrs. Judy!

I Can Do All Things...

This morning we met to worship together. 
Some of our students shared an interpretation of
Trust in You by Laura Diagle:


We are also started learning a new song today:
I Will Praise You:

Love the Lord your God will all your heart 
with all your soul 
with all your mind 
and with all your strength.


One of our favourite new songs is about "learning to be the light". 
Interestingly, there is a band, Newworldson, that made a video of this song Learning to Be the Light and the video was made right in the circle behind our school.

We Can Do All Things Through Christ

It was great to see everyone back again this week and 
wonderful to worship again together. 
This week, we met on Thursday so we could welcome our
Korean guests. They are staying with us for four weeks. We hope they feel welcome very soon!



Our theme for this month is the Biblical truth that we can do all things through Christ!

Some of our Grade 6 students shared a choral speaking of Psalm 29:

In Philippians 4: 12-13, we read, "I know what it is to be in need and I know what it is o have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want, I can do all this through him who gives me strength."

God works in us and through us by the strength that he gives us in each moment.
What a wonderful thought as we begin our new calendar year!
